In the beginning was a domain name... or was it a keyword?! For some smart people it is the same thing.
Your domain name is your unique image and your identity on the web.People will remember your site by its unique name. This will be an important part of the branding of your e-business. Your domain name creates that first important impression on visitors of your website.
So, what should be in a domain name?
If you have an established business, with its own name, which was known to the "off line customers", this should be definitely in your domain name. The same applies to the product name.
If you're just starting e-business - the best bet for you will be to put your chosen keyword or keywords in your domain name. It will boost your search engine optimization campaign. It is the first place for a search engine's crawlers to start looking for keyword, before the header, then h1 and h2 tags.
Good short domain names are sold for thousands and even millions, like "FriendsReunited". It is became a great business on its own - selling domain names.
20 million people have created new domain names last year alone. So chances to get a good short and memorable name are quite slim. But is it really necessary?!
Some three or more word domain do the job better than some short but useless domains. For example "WeBuyVintageClothes.com" is much easy to remember than "wbvincl.com". You can break your tong pronouncing the last one or spelling it on the phone or personaly. In whole people tend not to remember abbreviations with more that three words in it.
The advantage of a 3-4keyword domain is that you can put 2 or more keywords in it, which in itself is very valuable asset and search engines will definitely give a kick to your website ranking sooner rather than later.
The extention of the domain is important. Around 75% of all 70 million domain registered at the moment on the World Wide Web carrying .com extention. It is an original and a traditional choice for a commercial website (.com means business). Some other extentions like .org - represent non-commercial organizations, .gov with country abbreviation - represent a government body.
Search engine browsers will look for .com rather then .org sites first. So owning .com extention will be your first choice.
It is important research thoroughly and get your domain before you got your website. You want to start smarter e-business, because changing your domain after several months or years is not a clever thing to do, as you can loose your customers. You have to direct your customers to redirect page, which is not very helpful. People do not want to arrive to an empty space with yet another link on it.
Choosing a domain name becames an important task if you want to start smarter e-business .
