When we program websites, whether we use a design editor or hand code the sites, we invariably come across HTML. HTML is a common programming language, which is primarily used for web design. It is a simple code which will produce the majority of effects required in any good web site.

HTML sites very often have to comply with web standards, which are a set of recommendations that point towards the ideal form and function of a website, and whether any website is achieving its optimal usability and effectiveness. Most websites are programmed in html code, which stands for Hypertext Mark-up Language. It is essentially a set of signs and symbols which instruct a computer to read a document a certain way for the internet.

When it comes to programming languages, HTML is one of the easiest to understand and work with, and is particularly suitable for those people who design smaller websites with not too many frills. There are more complicated languages, like PHP and ASP and JavaScript, but HTML is by far the easiest to get to grips with. In order to be able to design these sites, it is necessary and beneficial to use a simple WYSIWYG html editor, such as Dreamweaver or Frontpage.

These editors take the pain out of trying to understand hyper text markup language, and instead give you the ability to be able to concentrate on the design and layout of your site, and leave the actual code up to the software itself, by way of drag, drop and insert tools. However, for anyone who likes to learn more about what they are doing, there are plenty of free tutorials on the internet available to read or download which can go in depth into what HTML is and how it can be used.
