Ever heard the old adage

""Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime""?

Well, the same can be applied to having a web site on the Internet. Learning how to write your own html code and building your own web sites will not only free you from depending on the whims of others but it can also open doors.

Its true that there are a lot of online site builders available on the Internet that allow you to build and publish a web site with little or no geekismness. To use one of these builders all you need do is, select a template, type in a little content, a couple of point and clicks and bada bing, your on the Internet. Just like thousands of others with the exact same web site.

If you will be satisfied with paying a steep monthly fee, for a limited web site, for something you can do yourself, then ""never mind"". But, for those of you who think that self-improvement, saving money and being on equal footing with your 10 year old would be a worthwhile endeavor then you should consider learning html.

Save money

The first thing that knowing html and building you own web site will do is save you a lot of money. The average online builder costs between $19.95 and $39.95 a month. I have a web site with hundreds of pages hosted on a basic plan and I pay $4.99 a month. The basic hosting plan that I use is more than the average small business web site will ever need.

Not only does learning to build your own web site save you money it also opens up a new world of opportunity.

Make money

The rates for professional web site builders vary from a few hundred for a small site, to thousands of dollars, depending on the number of pages and other factors. All things considered, the average professionally built web site, costs around $100.00 per page. As you can see, the potential to earn is there.

Once you have mastered html and have a few web sites under your belt you can consider a online business. Start by building a free web site for a few of your friends. Just to get the word out. Next, advertise to businesses and individuals in your local and surrounding newspapers. Most small businesses want a web site but don't have their own web design departments. The majority of my business comes from local advertising.

You already have all the tools you need

You don't need to buy any special tools or software to write html or publish your html pages. It can all be done with Notepad on a windows system or Text-Edit on a Mac system. Notepad can also be used to write most of the other popular scripting languages such as javascript and php.

Everything you need to learn web publishing is available right here. Instructions on web design, html tutorials, cascading style sheet tutorials all exist on the Web. There is no age limit and its free. So, what are you waiting for?
